Community Based Arts Education and Gallery

Art du Jour is a gallery and teaching studio space offering art and educational curriculum tailored to a monthly theme. Art education and technique classes will be offered to children and adults alike taught by credentialed instructors, many of which are professional artists and trades-people within the areas of expertise.

Co-founder Heather Young holds a teaching credential from the state of California and has a fine arts educational background. Co-founder Christine Currie has a background in multi media and advertising. Additional staff will include docents who have retired from education and share a passion for expression. Santa Cruz offers such a diverse economy from University students, working artists and educators who believe in the community investment of an arts education.

More details available at www.artdujour.org

The September focus is currently planned to feature a Fiber Arts theme underwritten by a major national brand of clothing. Educational themes around this artistic interpretation of fiber arts will feature local artisan wool sheering & spinning, screen-printing and a California classroom curriculum for local county public schools to attend these events as part of the field-trip experience. Additional local underwriting will offset the tuition/workshop fees for school groups applying for attendance. A limited number of scholarships will be awarded to deserving under served schools in the area.

Art du Jour has a number of local alliances that will help shape the curriculum and theme of arts education offered. The alliance with the Santa Cruz County Library system will feature geography based educational reading and arts programs for the summer and fall. We are working with the Museum of Art and History to develop a docent led teen and young adult artists program. In addition we are developing media educational components with the recently created Digital Arts program of the University of California Santa Cruz which will include digital animation, robotics and Lego© engineering which will debut in September, targeting 9-15 year olds.
