Mission Statement

To provide affordable English-language instruction and workforce programs to adult immigrants using volunteers

Description

Since 1993, Washington English Center, formerly Language, Education, and Technology Center (Language ETC), a community-based program, has offered English and literacy training to low-income adult immigrants in the greater Washington area using volunteer teachers and tutors. Our vision is that all immigrants gain the education and support they need to build a better future for themselves and for their children. Our mission is to empower adult immigrants through education to become contributing and self-reliant community members. Our goal is to provide high-quality educational services, access to technology, and life skills programs to any interested low-income adult immigrant in the Washington metropolitan area, regardless of ability to pay.

I have volunteered at the Washington English Center for over 15 years (with occasional breaks) and will continue to volunteer there as long as possible. It's a fabulous organization that makes a tremendous difference in the lives of hundreds of people every year. The volunteer commitment is fairly minimal, but the satisfaction is very high! Don't be intimidated by the idea of teaching English - WEC will give you plenty of support!

I enjoy being a volunteer teacher at the Washington English Center because it allows me to make a meaningful impact on students' lives by enhancing their English skills, which in turn expands their opportunities for personal and professional growth. The diverse cultural exchange enriches my own understanding of different perspectives, while the role also helps me to develop and refine essential communication and leadership skills. Additionally, being part of a community dedicated to education and social service provides a deep sense of fulfillment and connection.

Volunteering with WEC is hard work but very rewarding. They let you become an English teacher with only a little background. But once you commit, the staff of the Center are helpful and encouraging. There are lots of trainings, detailed emails, and good technology to support the very real challenge of teaching English.

I have been a volunteer with Washington English Center since January 2020 after finding the opportunity on this site. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. The WEC team provides wonderful support, and the students are eager to learn and so appreciative of our time. I highly recommend this opportunity!
