Mission Statement
A group of energetic lay volunteers willing to go one-on-one with the homeless, with a view to (a) listening to them non-judgmentally, without arguing with them; (b) encouraging them to talk about the worst of their problems; (c) helping them to break down their problems into manageable parts, and then (d) helping them find practical solutions for themselves, one problem at a time.
Description
The essence of what HANDS does is that it is one-on-one and immediate and, insofar as the problems to be solved are concerned, it is eminently practical. The volunteers deal with the homeless as if they were NOT homeless, but just people like themselves who have let their problems get the better of them, and who need a little bit of help and encouragement to regain a proper degree of control over their lives.
