Mission Statement

Delaware Greenways is a statewide nonprofit agency committed to the preservation and enhancement of Delaware's natural, scenic, historic, cultural and recreational resources. The organization works to accomplish this by preserving open space and greenways, increasing opportunities for walking and bicycling and creating more livable communities.

Description

Greenways are linear corridors of open space that can be used for either conservation or recreation. They come in many different forms--stream corridors, abandoned railroad rights of way, scenic highways, greenbelts around cities or riverfronts. Because of their linear nature, trails sometimes follow greenway corridors. The greenway trail provides a safe and enjoyable place to hike and bike. In 1990 Delaware Greenways planned the First Greenway in the First State-the Northern Delaware Greenway. This was a vision to link existing parkland from the Delaware River to the Brandywine by acquiring missing links of open space to create an emerald necklace of parkland just north of Wilmington. A hiking and biking trail across the interconnected parkland is planned and underway. The vision for the Northern Delaware Greenway has inspired many similar initiatives throughout the State of Delaware. Today, Delaware Greenways is leading grassroots greenway efforts in communities throughout New Castle County, leveraging public and private investment for greenways and trails statewide, and catalyzing the development of policy and initiatives to conserve, preserve and create more livable communities and scenic landscapes.
