Mission Statement

Marcus Memorial Campaign is dedicated to educate the public about Marcus' suicide; hoping to use Marcus' case as an example of problems youth face across the world and how vitally important it is to address the turmoil that our teens face. We further strive to inform the public about issues concerning suicide, edify issues of safe-sex, confront concerns of questioning sexuality, combat homophobia and defend the civil rights of all citizens. The Campaign is a bipartisan organization that works to advance consciousness based on identity, gender expression, sexuality, suicide, safe-sex and ones privacy; to ensure that all citizens can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in their community, without fear, threat or danger.

Description

The Marcus Memorial Campaign founded in 2002, grew from the need to educate the public about the tragic case of Marcus Wayman. Marcus was found carrying condoms by rural Minersville, PA, USA police at a traffic stop. The police concluded that Marcus was gay and threatened to â outâ him as such to the small community and his family. Hours later, Marcus at only 18 years of age committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, out of fear of being labeled â gayâ . We are a very small grassroots organization in desperate need of volunteers, support and help to spread a large message - intolerance or prejudice on any level should not be accepted. Justice must be achieved on all these levels, and is impossible without the common belief of many supporters.
