Mission Statement

Underground Railway Theater (URT) explores a changing landscape of artistic forms and community concerns, combining acting, puppetry and music to engage diverse audiences with theater that challenges and delights, informs and celebrates.

Description

URT was founded 25 years ago in Oberlin (one of the Midwestern stops on the underground railroad), and is now based in the Boston. URT's artistry has delighted audiences young and old for over twenty-five years at fine arts centers, symphony halls, museums, libraries, schools and community centers. The company has toured nationally and internationally. URT is committed to presenting theater that provokes discussion; builds bridges between people often isolated from one another; and reflects the cultural diversity of our audiences. URT also produces the annual Women on Top Theater Festival of New Works by New England women theater artists, offers teacher training workshops, in-school and after-school programs for children and teens.
