The American Heart Association saves lives through community education and supports medical research. Our mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all we do. The need for our work is beyond question. Diseases of the heart are the No. 1 killer in America, and stroke is the No. 3 killer. The American Heart Association strongly believes that learning more about these diseases is the best way to reduce disability and death. That's why research is an association-wide priority. Educating the community comes from a variety of branches at the American Heart Association. We have found that educating the community on CPR, healthy eating choices, and daily exercise is the key in making a difference. We do these life-saving actions through school systems, large community events, hospitals and educational materials.
"Heart Chase" is a new, fun, family-oriented race similar to "The Amazing Race". This new event is chaired by Melissa Smith of 7 & 4 News and will take place in mid September 2011 in downtown Traverse City. We will kick the event off at a park and give teams of 2-5 people clues to find the various 10 checkpoints. We will have celebrity teams, regular people, families, etc. Anyone can participate in this foot-based race. Each checkpoint will have a activity to complete. Each activity will teach the participants about healthy eating, exercise, or other life-saving learning experience. Media will be involved and most importantly a very large segment of the population in Traverse City will be educated on fighting our number one killer, heart disease.
