Mission Statement

The mission of The Healing Place of Athens is to help homeless men, regardless of race, creed, or religion, who are addicted to drugs and alcohol to achieve productive, independent, and sober lives. We pursue our mission by providing our clients with an overnight shelter, a residential recovery program, transitional housing and services, and an aftercare program.

Description

Homeless Shelter

Homeless men seeking emergency overnight shelter are provided with a place to sleep, a shower, and a hot meal. Those needing special attention are taken to area detoxification centers or to the Athens Regional Health Center. Our overnight clients are invited, never coerced, to enter our recovery program.

Recovery Program

Phase I is a self-paced group program structured around the Celebrate Recovery Program coupled with the counseling method of The Journey of Recovery and Life’s Healing Choices. During Phase I, clients participate in daily recovery workshops, which include written assignments and exams. Each client is a member of our family who shares in household chores, group leader responsibilities, and working in the overnight shelter. Program clients receive spiritual, individual, or family counseling. We offer two in-house Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and two in-house Narcotics Anonymous meeting weekly. Program clients are also assisted in finding an Accountability Partner who can mentor them through their recovery.

Transitional Care

Phase II clients continue to participate in meetings, chores, shelter duty, and counseling. Remaining at the facility is critical to our clients’ ability to overcome situations that "trigger" relapses and remaining focused on their recovery. We assist our clients in attending outside recovery meetings, finding jobs, receiving job skill training, and completing their education through a variety of resources available to us. We maintain a continuum of care for our clients by helping them find a place to live and continuing to offer them individual and family crisis counseling.
