Mission Statement

Families ACT!’s mission is to serve and empower families and individuals dealing with mental health and substance use issues; to educate the general public and relevant agencies about the critical need for treatment rather than punishment for people with mental health and substance use issues; to work with other grassroots and advocacy organizations, private providers of mental health services and agencies to create compassionate and effective treatment alternatives to the revolving door of incarceration.

Description

We have two theater troupes:

1. Wake-Up! Theater, featuring skits and biographical monologues, original songs about the stigma of mental illness, incarceration, homelessness, drug use

2. Despierta! A bilingual, mostly street theater for the people, of the people.

We are working to create a model of intensive transitional treatment for people with dual diagnosis based on interconnectedness and social enterprise.

We have a new Human Rights Coalition of groups working to reform the criminal justice and social service delivery systems, develop barter networks, community interdependence and self-responsiblity and to support each other's projects.

Our Moms United campaign works to end the criminalization of people who use drugs and redirect funding from criminal justice to wellness.
