Mission Statement

Staging a Miracle is part of a series of programs offered by First United Methodist Church to offer high-quality music and arts education to the children and youth of the City of Sacramento, regardless of their ability to pay. Our goal is to provide low-income children and youth of urban Sacramento with highly subsidized access to education in the creative arts and encouragement of each person’s intrinsic creativity. Staging A Miracle is not a religious program.

In addition, because we believe that children thrive when the whole family’s life is enriched, this program also offers family dinners two nights a week, and parallel arts enrichment for parents and younger siblings of the children involved in the central program. Transportation, a key component to the success of the program, is provided for the participating families. All of this has happens through the generosity of individual donors, foundations, neighborhood businesses and almost 100 volunteers from this congregation and its community.

Description

We start from the conviction that every person has gifts - gifts to give and gifts to receive. We also believe that providing a safe and nurturing environment for the city’s under-served will benefit all of the city’s residents. Participants in similar programs have demonstrated increased interest in the arts, development of creative skills, improved academic success, enhanced personal resources for self image and aspirations, and empowerment to reach for higher educational and personal goals. Most of all, we hope that every participant will know, in a tangible way, that they are cared for and that their own gifts are valuable.

In 2011, Staging A Miracle will once again offer a 5-week summer program of performing and visual arts taught by practicing artists and will include instruction in vocal and instrumental music, dance, acting, painting, photography and sculpture. There are many opportunities for volunteers from the community to be part of supporting the participants in a variety of ways while working alongside artists to ultimately create a culminating performing and visual arts event on Second Saturday, August 13, 2011.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Cooking and serving meals
  • Workshop support and hospitality
  • Practicing artists to teach workshops in visual and performing arts
  • Any other gifts and interests you may have. Let’s discuss what you would like to do!
