Citizen Schools seeks to educate children and build community through unique learning Apprenticeships that match talented volunteers with children, age 11 to 14. The program challenges children to become Apprentices and learn side-by-side with some of Silion Valley's most talented artisans, trades people and professionals -- Citizen Teachers who volunteer their time. Apprentices learn by doing as they actually write children's books, design web pages, start businesses, build kayaks, perform original plays, cook gourmet meals, publish newspapers, and much, much more.
Citizen Schools, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, was founded in 1995 and has a mission of educating children and building strong communities. The current core business of Citizen Schools is a network of 22 after-school and summer programs that engage more than 1,000 students (ages 9 to 14) and 1,000 community volunteers annually in a series of learning apprenticeships. The apprenticeships challenge kids and adults alike to gain skills and understanding while creating products and performances that add value to the community. Recognized as a national leader, Citizen Schools seeks to lead a renaissance in after-school education and make a significant contribution to education reform and community strengthening initiatives.
