Description
The Amigos Story.
In 1991, a few friends who had been volunteering with several child welfare organizations, including the Children's Home Society (CHS), were asked by CHS to form an auxiliary volunteer group. The mission of this auxiliary would be create awareness and obtain support from the burgeoning Hispanic community in South Florida. The auxiliary was named "Amigos of Children's Home Society."
A year later, due to the growing needs of disadvantaged children in the region, the group branched off and formed a new, independent, 501(C)3, Amigos Together For Kids, yet remained a committed supporter of CHS. Amigos was founded to respond to the diverse needs of South Florida's abused, neglected and less-fortunate children and their families, through education, abuse prevention and community involvement.
In 2008, Amigos became an affiliate of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Today, Amigos For Kids has evolved into a mainstream nonprofit and its child abuse prevention message now reaches communities across the country - no matter their ethnicity or native language.
Why does Amigos For Kids exist? Sadly, because children across the country continue to be victims of child abuse. National statistics indicate that abuse and/or neglect is the second leading cause of death among children and of those victims 85 % are under the age of four.
