Description
The Echo Project currently administers programmes in a rural village on the northern shores of Lake Malawi in Africa: Village Volunteers is a low-bureaucracy, direct action approach to easing the burden of health care workers and teachers in a rural African village by providing personal assistance in the clinics and classrooms. This program offers dedicated and enthusiastic young people the opportunity to make a positive contribution to a rural community while experiencing the lifestyle and culture of a traditional fishing village. There is are no placement or participation fees. Acommodation is provided free but volunteers must cover all other expenses. The Mwaya School Scholarship Fund seeks donations to pay school fees for local secondary school children in a rural subsistence farming and fishing community in northern Malawi. While primary education is free, secondary education is relatively expensive, often requiring several families to pool together to pay the fees of just one child. Sponsorship is just US$75 per year and covers tuition fees, books, uniform and a small living allowance for one student for a full year. We also facilitate volunteer-led after school clubs focusing on nutrition and cooking, organic gardening, AIDS awareness, environmental education, library organisation and small business development training.
