Mission Statement

The New York Studio School of Drawing Painting and Sculpture was founded by the noted American artist and educator, Mercedes Matter, and a group of students who, dissatisfied with the course of their art education, sought to establish a different set of criteria on which to base a program and teaching methods. Its distinctive curriculum, based on a studio/tutorial system, is predicated on total dedication to drawing, painting, sculpture and art history without the distractions of commercial applications or the peripherals of liberal arts programs. Innovative teaching methods continue to be developed by the faculty, comprised of art historians and professional artists.
