Cooking Matters is a nutrition education program that fights hunger by teaching families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices. The ideal instructor is someone with a culinary background or experience working in the food industry. Chef's job is to follow the goals and objectives outlined for each lesson in the curriculum, while using their own personal teaching style. Talking points include food safety; knife safety; budgeting; planning meals; making healthy choices and substitutions when cooking; eating together as a family; how to select, store and wash fruits and vegetables; how to navigate the grocery store and make the best choices. Demonstrating cooking skills should include how to read a recipe; how to measure ingredients; basic cooking techniques and terminology; proper knife handling; various cooking methods; food safety; and sanitations measures. Professional training or experience in the culinary industry. Interest in working with low-income individuals with diverse backgrounds. Willingness to be trained with Cooking Matters Curricula (CMC) and to work as a team with other volunteer team members. Wear your chef coat and closed toed shoes.

Responsibilities include: answer crisis line call, make appropriate community and emergency referrals when necessary, contact on-call staff if in-person support or shelter access is needed. Position is a member if the Hilltop Volunteer Program and the Life Enrichment Department. Volunteer works under the supervision/direction of the Senior Living Communities Life Enrichment Director in conjunction with the Volunteer Manager/Coordinator of Volunteer Services. The Commons of Hilltop and the Fountains of Hilltop offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and permanent and short term stays. Quarterly check-in meeting with Life Enrichment Director. Spend one on one time with resident, assigned by program. Engage resident in conversation, games or walking. TB test and Flu Shot reqiored.

Cooking Matters ia nutrition education program that fights hunger by teaching families how to make healthy and budget wise food choices. Professional chefs and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that instruct adults, teens, and kids living in low-income families how to get the most nutrition out of a limited budget. As a class assistant, arrive 30 minutes before class is scheduled to begin. Help unload groceries, supplies, equipment, arrange tables, chairs and the kitchen area, set up cutting boards on prep space with a wet paper towel underneath (to keep them from moving around), assemble grocery bags with spice packets for each participant, wash produce that will be used in class before class begins, set out cleaning supplies, paper products, and serving items, set out participant materials. Make sure all participants sign in on attendanace sheet. Be a runner for chef, support nutrition instructor and participants with activities and visual aids as needed. Helping supervise during prep (especially with knives), take class photos, gathering, cleaning, washing, and packing dishes, equipment and supplies. Serve as a positive role model for participants in the class.
