Mission Statement

The Mission of the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation is based on the original 1813 Mission of the Friends Asylum for Persons Deprived of the Use of their Reason, currently known as Friends Hospital, and is to: Promote the recovery of persons deprived of the use of their Reason and advance the provision of the requisite medical aid and sympathetic attention and oversight, as may soothe their agitated minds, through education, research, access to care, and support.

Description

Although the Foundation was officially established in March 2005, its roots and mission date back nearly 200 years to 1813 when Friends Hospital, the nation's first, private psychiatric hospital was founded. At that time, there were few resources and little understanding for people suffering from mental illness.
