Mission Statement

Women's Project & Productions (WPP) is the nation's preeminent theatre company dedicated to the development and production of new plays by women. As the oldest and largest women's theatre in the country, it has produced over 100 productions and three times as many readings and workshops. WPP has worked with a veritable "Who's Who" of American theatre including playwrights Anna Deavere Smith, Maria Irene Fornes, Emily Mann, Pearle Cleage, actors Mary McDonnell, Frances Sternhagen, Jayne Atkinson, Deirdre O'Connell, Lizbeth Mackay, Daphne Rubin-Vega, as well as directors Lisa Peterson, Evan Yionoulis and Joanne Woodward. WPP fosters emerging artists through its developmental programs- the Playwrights Lab and Directors Forum. It also encourages growth and development by commissioning new works, presenting workshops and readings, publishing anthologies (seven total) of plays produced, and hosting post-performance discussion panels and talkbacks. Every year, the Women's Project honors women of exceptional achievement, such as Whoopi Goldberg and Lauren Bacall, at our annual awards gala. In addition, WPP serves over 1,800 predominately at-risk public school students through its award-winning curriculum-based arts education program, Ten Centuries of Women Playwrights. We are the workplace for women in American theatre.
