Mission Statement

Alternate ROOTS is an organization based in the Southern USA* whose mission is to support the creation and presentation of original art, in all its forms, which is rooted in a particular community of place, tradition or spirit. As a coalition of cultural workers we strive to be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression. ROOTS is committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world and addresses these concerns through its programs and services.

Description

What: ROOTS Fest 2011: Many Communities, One Voice, a national arts festival celebrating the very best of our nation's local art in honor of ROOTS' 35th will be held June 22-26, 2011 in Baltimore, MD.

National Learning Exchange: As part of the event, the first 2.5 days will be a gathering of the field of community-based art-makers and practitioners for an intimate discussion, days full of workshops, case studies, community dialogues, and evenings full of performances.

Outdoor Festival: The second 2.5 days will feature local, regional and national performances, visual arts installations, films, etc. on multiple stages spread across the heart of West Baltimore. The performance/artwork content of ROOTS Fest 2011 will highlight the broad variety artistic disciplines in various venues across the city. There will also be an Art of Healthy Living pavilion, a young artists' tent, an artists' marketplace, food vendors, and many other wonderful areas for you to spend your time.
