Description

The Basic and Transitional Studies Division Tutoring Program at Seattle Central College exists to support and empower ESL, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED students by providing one-on-one tutors to assist these students as they pursue their goals. Our volunteers help students develop their English skills, prepare for the GED and COMPASS tests and play an important role in helping students develop their self-advocacy skills and foster community

Our program serves a diverse group of students who speaks many different languages and come from many different parts of the world. Our students also come from a variety of educational backgrounds. For some of our students, this may be their first time in a classroom or their first time learning to read or write while others may be returning to school to complete their GED, prepare for college classes or learn English.

Volunteers either provide one-on-one assistance to a student who is learning English or preparing for the GED or COMPASS tests or work in a calssroom as a classroom assistant. Volunteers help students to understand basic reading, writing, grammatical, and/or math concepts and provide opportunities to practice the skills they are learning in class.
