Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. Founded in 1972, the mission of Muntu Dance Theatre is to perpetuate an awareness and understanding of, as well as an appreciation for the dance, music and folklore of African cultures. The Company carries out this mission through professional performances of African and African American dance, a comprehensive community arts program, classes for the public, and professional training for new young artists.
As a result of 30 years of experience working in and with communities, we understand the benefits of active and sustained involvement in the arts for youth and other residents. Meaningful engagement in the arts provides a context through which one's own cultural heritage can be examined and validated. Youth are awakened to their own possibilities to achieve. Parents and other residents discover ways to explore their own creativy and to give voice to their personal histories and experiences. These benefits are maximized when sufficient time is provided for the artists and the community to build relationships, an essential element for long-term involvement and greatest impact.
