Teens Love Trains? Help restore locomotives & much more in Griffith Park!!

We have several volunteer opportunities! Tour Guide/Docent Interpreters: As a Docent Interpreter, you will SPEAK FOR THE TRAINS by leading tours through and around our historical equipment and passenger cars! Restoration Staff: Restore some of our exhibit cars to their former glory! Use your skills in carpentry, refinishing woodwork, plumbing or electrical system! Gardening: Maintain flowers and keep this part of Griffith Park beautiful! Track Building Crew: Work outside building track at Travel Town, moving rail, driving spikes, setting ties, etc! Administration: File, maintain mailing lists, do computer work, data entry, write proposals and more! Go to traveltown.org and sign up for an orientation!

Restoration Team Member

You will be working on the restoration of several of the railcars at Travel Town. Work could include sanding, cleaning, painting, building and refurbishing wood, metal, and plastic surfaces inside or outside the railcars. Depending on your skills and availability, you can work with or for Project managers on the restoration of historic passenger cars and locomotives at our Museum. We would love for you to prove your reliability, responsibility and leadership abilities with us to take on restoration projects at the Museum that prolong and extend the life of these Museum Pieces, while keeping as historically accurate as possible. You will be working with other Museum volunteers, sometimes in a leadership role, if you are able to manage other people. Projects can be range from replacing a wheel on a cart to replacing a stair mechanism in a vestibule, from changing light bulbs to replacing an diesel engine on a locomotive. If you are willing to learn and continue serving the Museum, we are willing to train you, as well.

Tour Guide/Docent

Tour Guides (Docents) lead visitors at the Museum on guided tours through passenger cars and around other railroad equipment. Tours are given on the weekends. There is setup time before and take-down time after tours are completed for the day. Tour guides are also needed during the week for school groups. This is a great way to teach future generations about the history of Los Angeles. This is a fun way to interact with visitors of all ages and practice your public speaking skills. Training and scripts are provided! Learn about the history of the equipment at Travel Town and about railroad history.

Volunteer CHEF

Our hardworking volunteers need a hearty lunch every Saturday at 12:30 pm. We need you to shop (of course, you will be reimbursed for every penny spent on this lunch), prepare and serve a meal for them. This is a great opportunity for you to be creative, hone your culinary skills, give back to the great City of Los Angeles and become a super, important (and popular!) part of our team. If planning the meal seems like too much, we can also provide suggested menus - if you could do the preparation and bringing it over, we'd love it!!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Foundation is to educate the public about railroad history as it pertains to the development of the Southwest Region of the United States, particularly the Los Angeles area. We fulfill this mission by supporting the restoration, operation, and interpretation of the historic railroad equipment at the City-operated Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park.

Description

Educational Tour Guides needed to instruct the general public and school groups. Great way to meet and talk with others in your community and help out the Museum. Volunteer leaders needed to work with local high school students earning their community service hours. Skilled restoration/mechanical volunteers needed to work on restoring Passenger cars and locomotives and other equipment at the Museum.
