Mission Statement

Founded by artists in 1974 at the historic landmark St. Mark's Church, Danspace Project is an international leader in the commissioning and presentation of contemporary dance. The mission of the Danspace Project is to stimulate, promote, and present challenging new work in dance from a broad range of artistic voices within a distinguished and nurturing environment. Danspace Project encourages choreographers to take risks and is committed to assisting artists in realizing their creative visions within a professional setting. Danspace also seeks to provide a receptive public to engage in and be transformed by the work of artists.

Description

Danspace Project is a performance venue for independent experimental choreographers. Twenty-five weeks of contemporary dance are fully presented by Danspace each season. Over the past 28 years, some of contemporary dance's most celebrated movers have made their mark on the spare sanctuary of St. Mark's Church, such as Douglas Dunn, Bill T. Jones and Bebe Miller. Additional Danspace Project programs include Dance:Access, Food for Thought and Draftwork. Dance:Access is provided for the self-produced artist. Food for Thought offers younger choreographers the chance to showcase their work in a weekend that also serves to collect for for local social agencies and Draftwork is a free and informal Saturday afternoon performance which invites a dialogue between choreographers and audience members.
