Surfrider Spirit Sessions

Leveraging the "Cool Surfer" image to connect kids to community and guide them onto better paths. We've found a way to make reform and good citizenry cool. Inspired by life messages in "The Surfer Spirit" book, The Surfrider Spirit Sessions uses surfing as a metaphor for life and builds on the experience of surfing to get kids stoked on life, learning and our 'aina. Volunteer Surf Mentors are key to the success of the program. Teens bond with their Surf Mentors in and out of the water as they process their experiences. We combine Hawaiian culture, athletics, socialization, mentoring, peer mentoring, and environmental education to develop new skills, enhance self-esteem, and build pro-social behaviors. Teens are also supported to think proactively, to improve their relationships, develop healthier support systems, and attain better life skills. The thrill of surfing evolves into a greater appreciation for the environment as surf sessions end with a mini-environmental science lesson and beach clean up.
