Mission Statement
We, The Port Family, inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Charism, hear our call to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ by full hearted service to the poor and throwaways of society. Our Goal is to evangelize the poor through a listening heart and presence, and through meeting basic human needs for food, shelter, clothing etc. Our call to service is also a call through the Catholic Church to have a "preferential option for the poor" in our mission and our life style. We strive to find Jesus in the "distressing disguise of the poor" and to serve Him.
Description
Founded in 1985 by Rev. Augustin Milon, OFM, Port Ministries began as soup kitchen at 51st St. and Ashland in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood. Over the next seventeen years the ministry grew to adapt to the needs of the men, women and children who needed assistance and support. The ministry now embraces several individual ministries, which, despite their specialized staff and varied scope of services, remain under the umbrella name of Port Ministries.
