To encourage the growth and health of the individual and the community through the use of creative expression.
Creative Alternatives of New York interweaves the metaphoric world of theater with the techniques of modern group psychotherapy. The Cany program is designed to help clients access their most creative energies, through the development of fictional characters and imaginary scenes, participants are able to use theater as a vehicle for therapy, healing and personal growth. During these workshops, destructive, repressed and otherwise blocked energies, find constructive outlets that build ego strengths and enhance social interaction. Without directly focusing on specific persons or events in their lives, participants make metaphoric choices that reflect their difficulties, dilemas, and dreams. As they "act" their way through these metaphors, group members bring buried conflicts to conscious life. A scene can be played several times, each time finding new and more effective resolutions. Creative Alternatives' program incorporates structured theater exercises, music, poetry, and movement. It is a conducive approach to examining issues, provoking thoughts and promoting a sense of community. Over the past 30 years, CANY techniques have been created, developed, and tailored to the specific emotional needs of the clients served.
