Creative Alternatives of New York (CANY) is a ground breaking drama therapy organization serving clients who have experienced some of life’s most difficult and tragic circumstances. Our clients have been deeply impacted by trauma -- they struggle to stay in school, to get off drugs, to be good parents, to be good brothers and sisters, to hold down jobs, to stay out of jail. Our work helps them re-engage and become productive members of their community.
Our model uses unique interventions and therapeutic approaches specifically geared toward understanding and treating the impact of trauma. Our therapists expertly combine tools from theater arts and group therapy to help clients understand their own emotions; learn to regulate behaviors, to relate to others and to regain capacity for trust. In a safe, non-judgmental environment, clients tap into their innate creativity and sense of self to imagine how to begin to create a new life.
CANY works with a variety of populations including at-risk children and youth, domestic violence survivors, veterans and active duty service members, youth and adults on the autism spectrum and newly arrived refugees. CANY provides our services to our clients in alternative schools, residential treatment centers, domestic violence safe shelters, community based centers and hospitals.
