Mission Statement
Hands Along the Nile is an American organization that is rooted in the Christian tradition and committed to respect for human dignity. Together with all who share this value, HANDS seeks to develop partnerships between Americans and Egyptians to increase intercultural understanding and to support Egyptians in their efforts to raise the quality of life for all in their land.
Description
Since its establishment in 1988, HANDS has worked to build better relationships between Americans and Middle Easterners through exchange programs and collaborative community development work. We work mostly in Egypt, but also conduct regional programs that include Morocco, Tunisia, and other countries. Currently, HANDS works with over 30 different community-based organizations in the Middle East. Some examples of our programs include:
- Professional Fellows Programs: Young professionals' exchanges across Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and the U.S. around women’s empowerment and disability rights
- Young Entrepreneurs Program for young Egyptians (with focus on female craft-makers)
- Economic Empowerment of Women Exchange Programs between MENA and the U.S.
- Interfaith Capacity Building: Promoting religious tolerance and peace through training and exchange
- Insight Trips for Americans to visit and volunteer in Egypt and in MENA
- Technical Assistance program which places Americans in volunteer positions in MENA (various issues including business development, recycling, climate change, sustainable agricultural practices, craft-design and marketing)
- Medical Mission, volunteer program in Egypt for American healthcare professionals
- Community-based Eye Hospital in Minia, Egypt
- APE (recycling and craft making project APE in garbage collectors’ neighborhood in Cairo)
- Online Arabic classes - a program for U.S. learners with Egypt-based Arabic teachers
