Description

A Brief History In 1993, Home for Contemporary Theatre & Art and Tiny Mythic Theatre Company embarked on a unique collaboration called HERE. The combined resources of these two young companies supported their vision of a new kind of non-profit enterprise. HERE was conceived as a self-sustaining home for artists containing three theatres, two galleries and a café. The ambitious plan envisioned a meeting place for artists and audiences unlike any other in New York. HERE was to be a place to take risks. Today, HERE presents work through HEREPerformance (theatre, performance, new media, music, and dance) and HEREArt-- our visual arts program. HERE has three fully-equipped performance spaces: a 99-seat flexible black box, a 85-seat thrust stage, a 74-seat proscenium space; two professional exhibition spaces, The MAINgallery (1,200 sq. ft.) and HEREunder (550 sq. ft); and EAT café (2,000 sq. ft.). HERE Performance's artistic agenda includes three levels of artist participation: Resident Artists, Visiting Artists, and Supported Artists. Resident Artists are at the heart of HERE's programs through: HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP), Dream Music Puppetry Program, Playwrights at HERE (PaTH). Visiting Artists are featured in the annual festivals: CULTUREMART (a two week festival of hybrid performance work), Queer@HERE (a two week festival of GLBT work), The American Living Room (a two month festival for emerging artists in all disciplines). The Supported Artist Program provides artists and arts organizations with: subsidized space, administrative support, equipment at below current industry prices (investing an annual amount of $150,000). Critically and popularly acclaimed work such as Basil Twist's SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE and Eve Ensler's THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES were first developed and produced through HEREPerformance. HEREart provides emerging curators and visual artists the opportunity to exhibit within an unique multi-arts facility before diverse and eclectic audiences. Annually, HEREart presents sixteen solo and group exhibitions curated by our staff and guest curators. Exhibitions in the MAINgallery include curator driven collaborations between artists as well as large-scale initiatives by solo artists. Exhibitions in the HEREunder gallery are intimate or small in scale: first solo exhibitions of early career artists, site specific installations, or thematic projects in development. HEREart extends expertise, oversight and technical assistance to the design, promotion and execution of each exhibition. Selected exhibitions include: Kim Mayhorn's installation A WOMEN WAS LYNCHED THE OTHER DAY, and The Lomographic Society's exhibition FROM MOSCOW TO NEW YORK. In eight years, HERE has transformed the cultural landscape of New York City. The works presented at HERE have been awarded two Berrilla Kerr awards, two Drama Desk nominations, one Pulitzer Prize nomination, nine OBIE awards, and an OBIE grant. HERE is unique in that it offers a comfortable home to thousands of emerging, mid-career, and established artists. HERE has served over 750,000 artlovers- most of whom fall in the coveted under 30 age group.
