Mission Statement

The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles enriches and nurtures personal growth, professional development and social change through engaging and accessible arts experiences inspired by Shakespeare’s plays and poetry, with a special focus on empowering under-served youth and veterans.

Description

Founded in 1986 by Ben Donenberg, The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles is driven by an underlying impulse that equates the creation of professional, award-winning theatre with the performance of tangible human services. Our evolving programs reflect this impulse as they demonstrate, in form and content, a unique, effective and artful response to the pressing need for community development.

SCLA is an integral part of the Los Angeles cultural landscape. From a youth employment program (Will Power to Youth) that hires young people challenged by severe economic circumstances to create and perform an adaptation of a Shakespeare play; to innovative curricula that provide teachers new ways to bring the words of Shakespeare to their classrooms; to the critically acclaimed professional performances of Shakespeare's plays; and our veteran employment programs, the festival's programs have a positive impact on the artistic, academic and economic health of communities in the Southern California region.
