City of St. Louis Department of Health aims to promote health education, and preparedness for public health emergencies.
Public Health plays a key role in enriching the quality of life throughout society even though the average resident isn't knowledgeable about public health. Public health is credited with adding 25 years to the life expectancy of people in the United States during the 20th century. Public health makes life better for all of us, by helping to protect our nation's health and safety, by providing credible information to enhance decision making, and through the continued creation of partnerships with local communities and organizations to promote good health. Thanks to public health we have come a long way since 1900 when life expectancy was 45 years and since 1913 when childbirth was the second leading cause of death (after tuberculosis) for reproductive age women.
Public health continues to help make our community healthier by identifying and solving community health problems; developing policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts; enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety; evaluating the effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and community health services; and researching innovative solutions to health problems.
