Mission Statement

The mission of L.A. Theatre Works is to increase awareness of and create access to significant works of dramatic literature, which promote cultural and educational values, through live productions, preservation and outreach. We accomplish our mission using a virtual theatre of audio recordings and technology to reach thousands of people on a local, national and global scale.

L.A. Theatre Works, founded in 1974, has been a creator of cutting edge programs for 27 years. We have evolved from a grassroots organization providing theatre workshops in correctional institutions, to a producer of award-winning plays, to a producer of plays for audio. In each instance our work has broken new ground and created new ways to experience theater. In 1987 we began recording stage plays for public and satellite radio broadcast including National Public Radio, BBC, Voice of America, XM Satellite Radio and other English language broadcasters--and today our Audio Theatre Collection includes over 300 classic and contemporary titles. The collection is available on audiocassette and compact disc through a national direct mail catalogue and is distributed to bookstores, libraries, schools and individuals throughout North America and internationally. As the leading audio publisher of plays in the United States, we provide fine, dramatic literature to thousands of listeners worldwide. Locally, for over 17 years, L.A. Theatre Works' ARTS & CHILDREN project recruits artists to conduct visual, literary, and performing arts workshops for at-risk students through the Los Angeles County Education/Division of Juvenile Court and Community Schools (LACOE/JCCS), the only fully accredited Court School system in the world. In 1997 we started our national educational outreach program, ALIVE & ALOUD, which is now in over 2,000 public schools.
