Mission Statement

Sustainability: More than a Slogan

Bringing sustainabillity to the home furnishings industry.

Description

The Sustainable Furnishings Council (www.sustainablefurnishings.org) is a non-profit coalition founded in Oct 2006 by furniture manufacturers, retailers, designers, media and NGO’s, including ranking staff of World Wildlife Fund, Rainforest Alliance, and one of the two co-founders of USGBC/LEED. The goal was to do for home furnishings what LEED did for commercial buildings, establishing credible, consensus standards and an organizing body for sharing best practices. SFC has grown to become the largest of its type in the industry, including large and small companies that have made a public, verifiable commitment to sustainability and a commitment to continuous improvement. SFC also launched GREENleaders, an industry-first, certified sustainability training course providing accreditation as expert in green home furnishings, and works with major trade shows, academic institutions, and ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) chapters around the country in providing education. Our goal is to help companies grow by "greening up" their operations.

Our goals are as follows:
  • To raise awareness of the sustainability issue
  • To assist companies in adopting good practices
  • To serve as an information clearing house
  • To create a symbol of assurance for consumers
