The mission of the ALP is to provide an innovative, learner-centered, and participatory educational program to educationally disadvantaged and Limited English Proficient adults.
The Adult Learning Program (ALP) was established in direct response to the demands for basic education, employment-related skill building, and ESOL services among local adults. Our goal is to help students attain the education, skills, and self confidence that will enable them to more fully participate in their communities and in the education of their children, and that will further enhance opportunities for employment, and personal development. In addition, we seek to provide the tools to enable historically disengranchised individuals and communities, including refugees and immigrants, to more fully access, utilize, participate in, and impact the resources and development of their city and their communities. ALP currently offers 7 levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), three levels of ABE from basic literacy through GED, and an External Diploma Program; all of which provide 8 hours of weekly instruction. Classroom based learning is supplemented by weekly 2 hour volunteer tutoring sessions offered by community members who are trained and supervised by our volunteer coordinator. Some tutors also provide assistance in classrooms.
