Mission Statement

The mission of the Youth Golf & Academics Program (YGAP) is to engage young people in constructive activities during after-school hours--a time when they are at risk of becoming involved in or falling victim to crime. By expanding children's horizons through new experiences and challenges, by enhancing academic performance through tutoring and related activities, and by teaching children discipline, integrity, and good sportsmanship through golf, we hope to even the playing field between our program participants and their more advantaged peers.

Description

Programming Initiatives: (1) The Golf Scholar's Program, a year-round initiative providing academic support and recreational opportunities (primarily golf instruction) to children four days a week from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Children are referred in by their first-grade teachers and remain with the program until they enter fifth grade. The estimated value of services each child receives on an annual basis is $15,000. (2) The Junior Links Initiative, which overcomes the dual barriers of access and affordability that place golf beyond the reach of many young people and their families. Children ages 9 and above are referred into the program, which runs during the summer/fall months, by schools or other partner agencies. In addition to learning the game of golf, the youth also participate in community-service and personal-development activities.
