Description

Over 7,000 internationals are studying in Columbus. International Friendships, Inc. is a faith-based organization that offers the students a variety of services and events to welcome and befriend them. Our volunteers embrace our vision, mission, and values.

We provide many services to all college students on a visa regardless of their religious or cultural background. We seek to meet the practical (airport pickup, temporary housing, and help with English Conversation), social (potlucks, picnics, holiday meals, trips, special events), and the spiritual (Bible studies, retreats, and one on one mentoring) needs of students.

I was very excited to volunteer as an ESL conversation partner, but unfortunately you are only allowed to do so if you are a Christian. Though it does not mention this in the ad, a representative of the organization responded to my inquiry by stating: "The students who sign up for a partner with us are expecting our volunteers to be active members of a local church. If for some reason you are unable to provide a reference then we will not be able to approve you as a volunteer." This might be a great opportunity for someone interested in promoting a Christian agenda, but prepare to be excluded if you are a Jew, Muslim, Hindu, non-believer, etc. Too bad; I really could have contributed a lot to their English education mission.
