Mission Statement

The Student Press Law Center is an advocate for student First Amendment rights, for freedom of online speech, and for open government on campus. The SPLC provides information, training and legal assistance at no charge to student journalists and the educators who work with them.

Description

The SPLC helps students and teachers whose futures are in jeopardy because they refuse to back down in the face of unlawful censorship. We help journalists in all media use open-government laws to hold schools and colleges accountable.

Since 1974, the Student Press Law Center has been the nation’s only legal assistance agency devoted exclusively to educating high school and college journalists about the rights and responsibilities embodied in the First Amendment and supporting the student news media in their struggle to cover important issues free from censorship. The Center provides free legal assistance and educational materials for student journalists on a wide variety of legal topics. Approximately 2,500 student journalists, teachers and others contact the Center each year for help. Calls come from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
