Mission Statement

The Austin Film Festival is dedicated to championing the work of aspiring and established filmmakers, defined as screenwriters, directors, editors, producers, actors and all artists who use the language of film to tell a story. The AFF furthers the art, craft and business of filmmaking by providing unique cultural events and services, enhancing public awareness and participation and encouraging dynamic and long-lasting community partnerships.

Austin Film Festival furthers the art and craft of filmmaking by inspiring and championing the work of screenwriters, filmmakers and all artists who use the language of film to tell a story.

What AFF is probably best known for around the world is its annual October Austin Film Festival & Conference.

The Film Festival & Conference was the first event of its kind to take the lead in bringing professional and amateur screenwriters (and now filmmakers) together to celebrate the role of the screenplay in filmmaking and discuss the considerable creative possibilities of writing for film and television. Equally important, the Conference brought producers, agents and screenwriters together to foster the sale of screenplays and launch long-term successful careers.

Hundreds of writers’ groups, services and festivals have followed the Conference’s model over the past ten years, reinforcing the value of its continuing mission to recognize the art of screenwriting.

Last year I bowed out because it seemed very unorganized. This year is MUCH better. I have volunteered 3 times thus far, and will consider adding more to my schedule - openings and tasks are now listed on their website to sign up for. Thus far the tasks I've been assigned have been repetitive office work like assembling packets for festival participants. Most everyone is friendly and they are keeping us busy. The reward is a film festival pass for several hours of work.

The organizers are really nice and they are very passionate about the event. They make sure that you understand the process and the responsibilities of the task you sign up for.
