Our mission is to empower the Korean American and immigrant communities through social services, community organizing, culture, and education to advance human rights.

Description

History

TWO KOREAN AMERICAN ORGANIZATIONS CAME TOGETHER IN 2017 UNDER THE CONVICTION THAT WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

On March 24, 1972, a group of concerned citizens met to discuss solutions to the acute problems that the first generation of Koreans were facing upon arrival in Chicago. This initial meeting transpired the establishment of a community social service organization on July 1, 1972. Since then, Korean American Community Services (KACS) has successfully responded to the needs of the Korean American community and contributed to enrich their lives. A half-time single staff agency has grown into a near fifty full-time staff agency, and the operating annual budget is now 2.3 million dollars. KACS currently serves more than 7,000 clients per year.

The Korean American Resource & Cultural Center (KRCC) was started in 1994 by a group of low income, recent immigrant youth in their late teens and early twenties. They met to discuss issues facing the Korean American community of greater Chicago. Recognizing the need for an organization that empowers community members through education, social service, community organizing/advocacy, and cultural preservation, KRCC opened its doors in 1995.

Volunteering as an ESL tutor for KACS has been a great experience so far. The staff takes both students' and tutors' abilities and goals into consideration to make beneficial matches all around. The tutoring schedule and content is up to you, but KACS has good resources and offers support and guidance if needed.
