Description

We are a Family Assistance Center, offering shelter to homeless families with children in Jackson County. Eight week shelter life is filled with obtaining employment, taking life skills classes, signing up for all social services applicable, saving 50% of your income. We have a community food pantry open Monday's from 10-3PM and Thursday's from 1-6PM. We partner with Gleaners to provide a monthly Mobile Pantry the third Wednesday of each month from 10-12. We partner with Bridgepoint Goodwill and receive clothing vouchers we can give out to the community. We are the homeless intake point for our county and can help direct those in need to services.

I work here every other Saturday. You never know what kind of day it will be but I can guarantee you that it will stick out in your memory forever. Whether you're spending time with a child who needs you and enjoy a craft together or simply talking with an adult resident, you're making an impact on their lives. I felt led there and searched for the reason. I recently found it and wow it was full of so many emotions. An 8 year old asked if he could list all of us who work there on his family tree. He said he considered all of us family there and it hit me instantly why I was there. I'm there for those children who just need someone to love them and give them structure. I promise after you leave you will go home and rethink everything you have and see how quickly it can all be gone. It could be any one of us anyday.

Volunteering for something you have a passion for is the gift that keeps on giving. There is satisfaction in helping others and it can be fun. Start a food drive at your church, school, club. Encourage others to take clothing to Goodwill and donate in honor of Anchor House. Come spend a day working the pantry and seeing how important the gift of food can be. Bring your kids and do a craft or holiday project with our shelter kids. Collect pop cans for tokens so shelter clients without transportation can get to the grocery, Dr., appointments. Shelter life is as busy as yours, we are no different. Come be a part of our story.
