Mission Statement

The Family Literacy Program is a free service provided to families that reside in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties. The program is based on the idea that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. We work with individuals and families by combining the four components of family literacy to create a comprehensive program. Since its inception, Trident United Way has been a strong advocate and funding partner for the Family Literacy Program.

Description

Parents of young children attend a series of sessions where literacy coaches provide information on child development, school readiness, and parenting challenges. Sessions are intergenerational and interactive - the parent, the child, and the literacy coach all play together to promote parent understanding of concepts and child's school readiness. Participants receive materials so that they can continue learning at home.
