Mission Statement
Gouverneur Healthcare Health Literacy department promotes health literacy through the "Volunteerism and Health Literacy Program". With this program, college student volunteers are recruited and trained each school semester as "volunteer health educators" to speak to patients about important health topics while they wait to be seen by a provider or fill a prescription. Topics covered include speaking to patients about reading nutrition labels and both prescription and non-prescription medication labels, managing multiple medications and becoming more active participants in their own health. We reach out to the low immigrant population who are benefitting by becoming more Health Literate.
Description
Volunteer Health Educators
Gouverneur Healthcare Services (part of NYC’s Health & Hospitals Corporation) has been providing quality healthcare in Manhattan’s Lower East Side for over 120 years. Poor health literacy (the ability to read, understand, and effectively use basic medical instructions and information) is a major problem facing the Lower East Side community. Gouverneur is currently seeking to recruit Student and Community Volunteers to help us address this urgent need.
