Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum collects, preserves, displays, interprets, and operates historic railroad equipment from Maine's two-foot-gauge railways for the education and enjoyment of the public.
Motto: Let History Live!
We preserve the experience, up close and personal, of riding, running and maintaining Maine two foot narrow gauge railroads.
Volunteer driven railroad museum in Portland Maine. One and 1/2 miles of track, 3 steam locomotives, 2 diesel locomotives, 10 passenger coaches, all from the 1880s to 1940s. On average, we have 5 volunteers on-site each day, and two paid staff.
Volunteers do all the historical interpretation, museum exhibit design, sell tickets, fix trains and operate trains.
Our track gauge is 2 feet between the rails - the smallest in the U.S. for a full-service railroad. There were five 2 foot narrow gauge railroads in Maine. The last one went out business in 1943. Fortunately much of this equipment was preserved and we have the largest collection in the world.
