Mission Statement

Texas Scholars is a community-driven initiative designed to motivate and encourage high school students to complete the challenging state Recommended High School Plan.

Description

According to the Employment Policy Foundation, by the year 2010, the shortage of college-educated workers will be 3.6 million, and by 2030, it will be 20.4 million. The Texas Scholars encourages today's high school students to complete a rigorous high school curriculum, thereby increasing their scores on exit exams and college entrance exams, making them more likely to graduate from college, preparing them for success in the workforce, and informing them about the TEXAS Grants - scholarships that are available for low income students who complete the Recommended Plan. The Texas Scholars program relies on volunteers from the business community to share thier experiences with high school students in the form of a 45 minute classroom presentation. The presentations highlight the importance of getting a solid academic foundation in high school to ensure success in post-secondary education and the workforce. Now more than ever, Texas students need to meet the challenges presented by this difficult curriculum. The new high school exit exam is more difficult and comprehensive, and the well-paying jobs in this society go to skilled, well-educated people. All volunteers will be fully trained and given all materials, including PowerPoint presentation, slides, and videos.
