Mission Statement

For the past 39 years, Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California (RIFSoCal) has worked to promote literacy by motivating children to read and inspiring them to become lifelong readers.

Description

RIFSoCal conducts three Literacy Based Events in each of our 300 sites annually, distributing over 300,000 books to more than 100,000 children. Participating sites include Title 1 elementary schools, Head Start programs and a variety of community service programs. A book event can be as simple as a volunteer reading to a group of children or as complex as a festival celebrating a particular culture or holiday in an elaborately decorated auditorium with thematic activities. At the end of every RIFSoCal book event, each child gets to choose a brand new book to keep and share with their families at no cost to the child, their families or the site. One distinguishing feature of our approach is that we ask that the books not be used for book reports or given as rewards. We want children to choose a book that he or she will enjoy for its own sake - a book that will compel them to read for pleasure.
