Mission Statement
The mission of the Montgomery Countryside Alliance is to promote sound economic, land-use and transportation policies and programs that preserve the natural environment, open spaces, and rural lands in Montgomery County's Agricultural Reserve for the benefit of all Washington Metropolitan area residents.
Description
Help new farmers grow and build community - facilitate a new Land Link program so that producers may readily lease or buy land, provide guidance on funding and government programs, partner with Bethesda Green to boost local food consumer base and connection and create means(online) for producers to link to one another.
Collaborate with the County, business community and other stakeholders to create a means to bolster greater food production, while creating business opportunity, jobs and a means to feed the growing number of area residents in need.
Publish, in collaboration with Ag Services, Park and Planning and Whole Foods, our new Ag Guide - a popular and valuable resource for area residents seeking produce/products and activity in the Reserve ~ both in print and online.
Promote awareness and protection of the Reserve's water resources, including the federally designated Sole Source Aquifer, the only source of potable water for much of the County's rural communities.
Monitor and weigh in on the County's comprehensive zoning code (which includes the Reserve) re-write and important legislative initiatives including forest conservation.
Press forward with a formal County rural schools' policy that will ensure that Reserve communities are not penalized because they have been preserved and are small, by design.
Educate our political representatives and the region's residents about the critical need for a vital, working landscape within the Reserve. Produce information on local farms and the Reserve's natural resources including wildlife for County's school kids.
