Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA ) is a not-for-profit student loan guarantor that works in partnership with schools, community organizations, banks and other lending institutions to help students continue their education. NELA administers the Federal Family Education Loan Program and guarantees payment of loans in the event of default. This guarantee encourages commercial lenders to make loans on favorable terms to students, who often have no collateral or credit history. NELA also provides information and guidance to students and families about access to, paying for and being successful in higher education.
