Mission Statement

Transdiaspora Network (TDN) is an independent human-capacity building nonprofit organization conducting culturally oriented HIV prevention and awareness activities in Brooklyn, New York. Our mission is communicating culturally-oriented solutions to the next generation fighting HIV/AIDS and empowering at-risk youth to develop civic responsiveness within peripheral communities.

Description

TDN offers community-based, culturally aware preventive interventions for at-risk youth in Brooklyn, NY, and identifies community resources, empowerment based interventions, and educational approaches to increase health literacy and youth empowerment. Our cross-cultural and local approach within diverse Brooklyn communities brings a new social meaning to culture and tradition.

Working with at-risk adolescents ages 14 to 18, we articulate a different dialogue about prevention, by introducing a new methodology to social entrepreneurship combining concepts from Psychology, Anthropology, Counseling and Social Work with cultural expressions of the Caribbean culture such as dance, music and folktales.

Our interest in HIV prevention stems from the desire to go beyond the current biomedical and individualist approach. TDN's holistic methods combines education, recreation and therapeutic elements. We focus on health promotion by tapping into the vast cultural reservoir of peripheral communities, transforming deficits into strengths.

Our slogan is Talk Things Out!
