Description
To perform all lawful acts necessary or desirable to carry out its purpose consistent with the provisions of the laws of the State of Texas and Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and the regulations as they now exist or as they may be hereafter be amended.
To reach out to those affected by eating disorders in the Austin and Central Texas area by promoting awareness and education, providing resources, and offering encouragement and support.
To promote establishment of an internet web site to provide information about eating disorders. The web site may include: (1) FAQs to educate people about eating disorders and the treatment of such disorders, (2) general interest articles developed by professional members of AFED, (3) personal profiles and stories of persons who are in recovery from an eating disorder, as well as success stories from providers and families dealing with such disorders, (4) directory of local area care providers, (5) links to other eating disorder organizations, (6) information on support groups for friends and family members of persons with eating disorders, (7) information on how to effectively interact with health care providers, health insurance companies, schools, employers, co-workers, and others regarding eating disorders.
To offer public workshops, presentations, and support groups on current topics related to eating disorders and how to prevent, identify and treat them.
To recruit physicians or other health care providers who would be willing to donate time to treat eating disorder patients or to provide services on a discounted basis.
To recruit laboratories to offer discounts on services for patients with eating disorders.
To serve as a "speakers bureau" for Austin and Central Texas schools, businesses, and other organizations seeking in-service training for teachers, nurses, counselors, and coaches.
To develop and offer continuing education units for professional training opportunities.
To provide opportunities for students, such as LPC interns, in university or college courses to work with professionals, patients, and their families.
To hold fundraising events to support the purposes of AFED.
