Mission Statement

We are your neighbors and friends who want to improve the quality of life for all of us by helping to reclaim our basic right to freedom of mobility. We are committed to reversing the harm to our collective well-being, the unraveling of our neighborhoods and communities, and the other increased risks we face daily due to our focus on the automobile at the exclusion of other modes of transportation. We advocate for providing safe and effective cycling and walking for all citizens through education, lobbying, and facilitation among our communities, governments, and state and local representatives.

Description

One Less Car, a 501c3 non-profit organization, began in 1999 as Maryland's only statewide organization advocating for the rights of pedestrians and cyclists. In 2000, we drafted and successfully lobbied for the passage of Bicycle and Pedestrian Access, 2001. This law created the position of Director of Bicycle and Pedestrian Access, reporting to the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation, requiring the state to develop a long-range bicycle and pedestrian plan, and mandating sufficient funds for bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Last year, we added to our legislative accomplishments by creating a pilot "Safe Routes to School" program for Maryland. This will improve facilities around schools and encourage parents to support their children walking and cycling in their communities. One Less Car also began working with the city of Rockville to create a bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum for elementary school children. When completed this will serve as a model for the schools throughout the state. Not to leave out the adults, One Less Car will begin offering a bicycle safety course in 2002 to the general public.
