Mission Statement

Laurel House Middlesex is a structured, welcoming place where people with ongoing mental illness come to gain support, learn to work, and rebuild their lives. Laurel House Middlesex is the first Clubhouse for New Jersey based on the successful model developed by the International Center for Clubhouse Development.

Description

Laurel House Middlesex rebuilds lives by focusing on wellness and abilities rather a person's illness. We have members, not patients. Membership is open to anyone that seeks recovery from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other severe and persistent mental illnesses. Membership is voluntary and for life. Laurel House Middlesex members are treated with dignity and respect.

Laurel House Middlesex is designed to help members deal with their problems, provide them with support, and secure successful employment for them. We help them tap their natural interests, intelligence and imagination to create a better life. The skills, talents, ideas, and efforts of each member are needed and encouraged each day. At Laurel House Middlesex, there is much more work than can be accomplished by the few employed staff. Members and staff work side-by-side to operate every aspect of the Clubhouse.

Laurel House Middlesex implements a structured clubhouse system known as the work-ordered day. This is an eight-hour workday, Monday through Friday. Members begin as volunteer workers in their clubhouse, while learning employment skills.
