Mission Statement

To improve quality of life for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), particularly those in child-headed households, in communities adversely affected by HIV/AIDS through health education initiatives and by facilitating access to available resources.

Description

Established in 2006, SOHO works with a diverse coalition of organizations and institutions both in the US and abroad to collectively develop sustainable solutions for the problems of orphans in southern Africa. SOHO has been an innovator in building Welcome Places where OVCs can obtain food, clothing, education, and counseling in their rural villages. In partnership with Andrews and Purdue Universities, SOHO is successfully developing a 67 acre farm project in HhoHho, Swaziland that not only provides food for OVCs but also training for local farmers in innovative technologies to ensure that their agricultural efforts are productive. SOHO has also hosted numerous free clinics in KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, and Swaziland. A peer counseling program has been piloted to help prevent suicide among OVCs and to educate youth on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and the importance of positive life choices.
